Christopher Hampton
|
One of the most consistently successful British Screenwriters and
Playwrights of the last 35 years. The young playwright's first screenplay
was an adaptation of Ibsen's A Doll's House (1973).
He was an 18-year-old student at Oxford when he had his first play produced
(and is still the youngest ever playwright ever produced in the West End).
He earned his reputation for excellence while working as the resident
dramatist at the Royal Court in London between 1968 and 1970. While there,
he proved himself equally adept at adapting classic literature into plays as
well as writing his own. His stage adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos' Les
Liaisons Dangereuses brought him international acclaim.
Oscar for best adapted screen play 1989 for Dangerous Liasons (also won
British writers Guild Award best adapted screen play 1989). He was also
shortlisted for special jury prize in Cannes 1995 for his debut at screen
directing for "Carrington". In 1995, won two Tony Awards for "Sunset
Boulevard:" as Best Book (Musical) with Don Black, and as Best Original
Musical Score, sharing lyrics credit with Black and music by Andrew Lloyd
Webber. He previously has received two Tony nominations as author of Best
Play nominees: in 1971 for "The Philanthropist" and in 1987 for "Les
Liaisons Dangereuses."
He was awarded the C.B.E. (Commander of the British Empire) in 1999.
